Nomination Instructions

Welcome to the information page for the Morehead-Cain Nomination process. For a list of important deadlines, please see the
2007–2008 Morehead-Cain Selection Process Calendar.

The process of admission to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is separate from the application for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. Although you are not required to apply to the University to be nominated for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, you must do so before you can receive the Scholarship. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that you apply to the University as soon as possible. All forms and correspondence dealing with admission should go directly to the University Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Who is eligible to be considered for the Morehead-Cain?

Any student attending high school in North Carolina is eligible for consideration.

  • NC students may be nominated by their high schools; or
  • NC students may apply directly if not nominated

Students attending high school outside of North Carolina must be nominated in ONE of the following ways:

  • by a participating eligible school outside of North Carolina
  • by any secondary school in the United Kingdom
  • by a nominating affiliate program
  • by the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of Undergraduate Admissions
  • as a direct or sponsored applicant from any secondary school or cégep in Canada

Complete guidelines for each of these nomination options are available on this site. Simply select Students, Counselors, or Recommenders from the options listed above to view detailed instructions.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosts two independent merit scholarship programs: the Morehead-Cain and the Robertson (www.robertsonscholars.org). A student may not be considered for both scholarships at UNC-Chapel Hill at the same time, so a student who is eligible for both must choose between the two, and must indicate her or his choice at the outset. An application or nomination for one of the scholarships at UNC-Chapel Hill may not be made while an application or nomination for the other is pending.

If you have any questions about the nomination process, please call the Morehead-Cain Foundation at 919-962-1201 or 800-741-9023, or e-mail moreheadcain@unc.edu.
